INTERNET OF THINGS AS THEORY OF MEDIA AND INFORMATION

 

a)  In your own words, define Internet of Things.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a web or network of interconnected objects, including people, that can access the internet.

b)  What brought this theory about?

Kevin Ashton, the Executive Director of Auto-ID Labs at MIT, was the one who coined the term Internet of Things and also the first to describe it, while making a presentation for Procter & Gamble. During his 1999 speech, Mr. Ashton stated that the internet was largely dependent on human beings for the input of data and information that it used. However, this serves as a problem, because humans only have such limited time, being occupied with other activities and tasks. So he presented the idea of “computers that knew everything there was to know about things.” They would be able to gather data without the need for humans.

c)  Do you like the concept of IoT? Why or why not?

I like its concept, by using it, we could save a lot of time, money, effort, and resources and use them for other things. However, the thought of an independent computers that have minds of their own somehow also scares me.

d)  In what situations do you encounter IoT in the Philippines?

Currently, there is a rise in the trend of wearable devices that allow you to connect to the internet, an example being smart watches. Smart watches basically has the same functions as phones, the only difference being that watches can be worn on the body and are also a bit harder to control.

e)  How do you think IoT will evolve and affect Filipino society in the next 3 to 5 years?

I think in the next 3 to 5 years, there would be a lot more devices that can have access to the internet, stuff like smart watches and smart phones, but they would have more advanced technology and capabilities. They would be practical and useful and we would become greatly dependent on these devices in order to function in society.

f)  What do you think is the relationship / cause and effect of IoT in media and information literacy?

I think that having the Internet of Things allows us to have more access to a variety of sources of information. This also creates the possibility of having more media available to a lot of people, making information easier and easier to get.
